Working with the Hyper-Flexible Student
(For teachers of any style)
You may have students who move very far in poses but are living in pain or with a very busy mind (maybe one of those student is you!) Learn what's going on for them (or you!) and get important "dos & don'ts" for students with overstretched ligaments ncluding specialized props and alignments. Gain insight into both the anatomical and emotional aspects of hyper-flexibility. When the joints are hyperflexible, the internal core layers are very rigid. Specialized angles and refined propping is required. Hyper-flexible students will transform their practice and teachers will learn to work with the many students dealing with slippery joints and tight spines.
How to Touch (and How Not to!)
(For teachers of any style)
As a yoga teacher it is very important to work hands-on with students, to give them direct insight into where their bodies are in space and how to get the most out of a pose. However, while a teacher may be comfortable with this, many yoga students are surprised at first, and may even be survivors of physical or sexual abuse. Learn the value of hands on alignments and adjustments (regardless of your particular yoga style) as well as specific do's and don'ts. Discover how to be confident, effective, safe and supportive with touch as well as how to let go of attachment for students "get better" or "need" you in the process. Explore the difference between essential and "touchy-feely". This class combines lecture, discussion and partner work for direct experiential learning that you can bring to your own students right away!
Develop your Communication Skills
(For Svaroopa(R) Yoga teachers)
This workshop for Svaroopa(R) Yoga teachers focuses on teaching and language tools that effectively communicate the value of spinal release to new students - particularly those coming from the pilates, gyrotonic, workout, or modern western yoga paradigms. This is a particularly important skill for teachers in communities or studios where incoming students have previously experienced other approaches to working with the body. In many cases you are interacting with students' attachment to a paradigm that is not benefitting them, OR a preexisting notion about what yoga is that prevents them from being open to something new.
- Look at the mindset of those coming from those modalities and learn to work with that mind set rather than against it.
- Gain understanding of the physical impact of these other paradigms and what poses and adjustments will most effectively give them immediate experience of letting go.
- Develop great one-liners to use with new or doubtful in the classroom and your marketing materials about Svaroopa yoga.
- Learn the pitfalls in teaching and communication that may turn off new students comic from another paradigm.
- Explore why and how Svaroopa(R) yoga is different from other styles so that you can smoothly answer questions that arise in students from other styles without offending or criticizing.
- Learn to recognize the physical patterns of runners, Ashtanga Yogis, Iyengar Yogis, dancers and so on. This skill can give you the capacity to get right to the nub of things with a student.
- Expand your student base by attracting and maintaining a flow of new students who stay. Plus, when you communicate clearly, you train students to communicate with their loved ones more clearly about Svaroopa yoga and your word of mouth student base grows.
